History Makers: Springbok women stun Italy to reach quarters

By Razeen Gutta

The South African women’s rugby team made history by defeating Italy 29-24 in York, securing a spot in the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarter-finals.

The Springbok women dominated the match with their powerful forwards as Sinazo Mcatshulwa scored the decisive try in the final minutes.

“This is massive,” said flyhalf Libbie Janse van Rensburg.

“We talked about making history for women’s rugby in South Africa and we did that.”

The win means they now join France, Ireland, and New Zealand in the last eight, with England, Canada, and Scotland also advancing.

Australia and the United States are still in contention for the second spot in Pool A.

France thrashed Brazil 84-5, while Ireland outran Spain 43-27 and New Zealand beat Japan 62-19. The quarter-final lineup is taking shape, with one spot still to be decided.
