The North Gauteng High Court has ordered Basic Education Minister Angie Motshegka to reinstate the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP).
The court said the minister and all provincial education MECs – except the Western Cape – were in breach of the Constitution. This is because they failed to restart the school feeding scheme when schools reopened.
High Court Judge Sulet Potterill said:
- The government failed to feed children
- Ministers must immediately roll out the NSNP to nine million qualifying learners
- Government must report back to the court within ten days with a plan – and update the court, under oath, every 15 days on progress
GroundUp reported that the Equal Education, Equal Education Law Centre and SECTION27, which launched the urgent application, described the programme as “a life-saving programme for the poorest of the poor”.
