“Don’t judge me.”
This is one of the messages on a handwritten note discovered next to an abandoned baby girl near a stream in Dawncrest in Durban.
The unknown child was found alive and well in a bush at the base of an embankment by a man picking mangoes next to a soccer court.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), which arrived first at the scene, said the mysterious note was found in the child’s bag.
Here is the letter in full:
“Hi you might be wondering why I dumped my baby, don’t wonder just help her if you can or call authoritise but don’t judge me I have spoken twice with social workers they delaying to assist, I know this looks bad but I had no option the system is fragile and we can’t even abort safely anymore hospitals have strict rules.” *
“A bag containing nappies, a bottle of milk and a pacifier was lying next to the child,” said Rusa in a statement.
The unit said a case of child abandonment will be opened.
Scrolla.Africa could not establish whether the police were investigating any case at this stage.
