- Two Fidelity guards died on Monday after cash-in-transit robbers attacked their delivery truck near Nkunzane village in KwaZulu-Natal.
- A third guard was shot and rushed to hospital while robbers blew open the truck and stole cash.
Two security guards are dead after cash-in-transit robbers attacked a Fidelity delivery truck at the gates of a royal palace.
The truck was travelling from Nongoma towards Pongola on Monday, 7 September 2026. A group of armed suspects driving in different vehicles attacked the truck near Nkunzane village.
The guards drove at high speed into the gates of the KwaKhangela Amankengana Royal Palace to hide. King Misuzulu kaZwelithini uses the palace for high profile visits and meetings.
The attack terrified workers inside the palace. Royal servants, chefs, and police officers guarding the gate ran to hide in the kitchen area as gunshots broke out.
The robbers used explosives to blow open the truck. The blast destroyed the vehicle and damaged the palace wall and a police house.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshuinda said two security guards died at the scene. Robbers shot a third victim, who was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
The gang ran away with an unknown amount of money. Police are investigating a case of cash-in-transit robbery, two counts of murder, and attempted murder.
This is the second cash heist in Nkunzane village in one month. Robbers attacked an armoured van delivering Sassa pension payouts on 6 August.
Police arrested those suspects in Durban last week Thursday.
