Josh Hazlewood claimed a career-best 6-49 as Australia beat South Africa by 214 runs in the first test at Kingsmead on Tuesday.
Hazlewood, taking his 15th five-wicket haul, bowled 16.5 overs of relentless accuracy on a still-good batting pitch.
His dismissal of Simon Harmer, a ball that leapt from a length to brush the glove to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, was the ball of the match.
South Africa kick started day five on 102-4 chasing a nominal 421, but needing to bat the day for a draw.
Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder frustrated Australia for almost two hours, adding 69 in 205 balls before Mulder edged Hazlewood to Carey low to his left.
Matt Renshaw struck in the next over, having Kyle Verreynne caught at slip by Steve Smith, who was cleared after a blow to the helmet on day four.
South Africa went to lunch on 166-6, still needing 255. Any hope of an Adelaide 2012-style escape ended quickly.
Markram and Marco Jansen added 45 for the seventh wicket before Hazlewood bowled Jansen through bat and pad, then removed Harmer.
Markram, who showed immense patience in a six-hour innings off 237 balls, featuring ten fours, was out for 75 when he inside-edged Mitchell Starc to Carey, who took five catches.
Hazlewood finished it when Anrich Nortje chipped to midwicket.
Matt Renshaw was man of the match for his first-innings 190 and second-innings 82 plus 2-30 with the ball.
Australia lead the three match series 1-0 ahead of the second test at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Sunday.
