The Hawks have arrested 32-year-old Fidelis Moema for allegedly stealing millions of rands worth of student bursary funds from auditing firm KPMG.

Moema is accused of stealing, committing fraud, and laundering R16.5-million, IOL reported.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela said that Moema handed himself over to the Hawks’ serious commercial crimes investigation division on 2 April.

Moema, who worked as a bursary specialist at KPMG, allegedly misdirected student bursary funds to businesses linked to his friends and then had those funds sent back to his personal bank account.

Mavimbela said this occurred in 2021 and 2022 and led to substantial financial losses for KPMG, a multinational company that provides audit, tax, and advisory services globally.

“KPMG has suffered a loss of R16.5 million due to his fraudulent actions,” he said.

Moema appeared in court at the Palm Ridge commercial crime court on Tuesday. His case has been postponed to 9 April, when he will apply for bail.
