A phenomenal display from Harry Kane helped Tottenham Hotspur to claim all three points against the league leaders Manchester City at the Etihad on Saturday.
Spurs went ahead early on through their new signing winger Dejan Kulusevski to set the platform for what would end up being one of the great Premier League games. Kane played the pass to Heung Min Son to set up the goal before Ilkay Gundogan levelled matters before the break.
Kane was back with a brilliant sprint to latch onto a Son ball on the hour mark and he might have made it three if not for VAR ruling out his 74th minute finish.
Late drama was the order of the night when Spurs centre half Cristian Romero was found to have handled the ball in the box in stoppage time after a VAR review. A penalty was awarded and Riyad Mahrez made no mistake from the spot, hammering the ball into the roof of the net.
Just when a draw looked likely, the England captain struck again for Spurs. Kulusevski boosted down the wing to set Kane up for a header to win it in the 96th minute in truly unforgettable fashion.
He later told Sky Sports when collecting his man of the match award that results like this are what the Premier League is all about.
“Crazy game! We worked so hard for so long, being 2-1 ahead for quite a lot of the second half, so to concede a penalty in the last minute was so heartbreaking. But credit to the boys, we managed to find another chance at the end,” he said.
“That’s what the Premier League is all about. A great game for the neutrals and obviously for our fans as well — they’ll go happy today. We had to find a way to get our season back on track, so to grind out that result was really special,” he added.
The result was undoubtedly a special one for Liverpool fans as well. The Reds now find themselves just six points off the summit with a game in hand on Manchester City and a trip to the Etihad still to come this season.
