Gunners advance to Champions League quarters!

By Razeen Gutta

Arsenal snatched a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over FC Porto after winning 1-0 on the night to level matters on aggregate.

Leandro Trossard got the decisive goal minutes before half time to help Mikel Arteta’s side back into the tie after an away defeat in the first leg.

Once the game had gone the distance, with the North London faithful behind them, the Gunners had David Raya in goal to make two crucial penalty saves in the shootout.

The game was the first knockout tie to go to penalties since the 2016 all-Madrid final between Atletico and Real.

Arsenal’s win brings an end to their curse that saw them go on a run of seven consecutive last 16 eliminations in the Champions League. They made the quarter final for the first time since 2009/10.

At the Camp Nou, Barcelona overcame Napoli 3-1 to pick up a 4-2 aggregate win over the Italians.

Napoli’s season continues to go from bad to worse, with their elimination from Europe adding to their league woes. They currently sit in seventh place in the Serie A standings.

On Wednesday, Atletico take on Inter while Borussia Dortmund face PSV.

Both ties still hang firmly in the balance, with Inter leading 1-0 while Dortmund and PSV go in level at 1-1 after their first leg.
