A gunman was killed after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time but was not hurt.

The shooting started just after 6pm in Washington when a man pulled a gun from a bag and began firing near the White House fence.

Secret Service officers shot back and killed the suspect, said spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

The suspect died in hospital.

One bystander was also shot during the chaos, but officials did not say how badly the person was hurt.

No Secret Service officers were injured.

Trump praised the officers for their quick response.

He said the gunman had a violent past and may have been obsessed with the White House.

The United States media identified the suspect as 21 year old Nasire Best from Maryland. Reports said he had mental health problems and had previous contact with Secret Service officers.

Police and National Guard troops rushed to the area and blocked roads around the White House.

Journalists near the White House were told to run for cover.

ABC News reporter Selina Wang said: โ€œIt sounded like dozens of gunshots.โ€

Trump has faced several security threats in recent years.

In July 2024, a gunman wounded him during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania and killed a member of the crowd.

Another armed man was later arrested at Trumpโ€™s golf course in West Palm Beach.
