Manchester City celebrated Pep Guardiola’s 1000th game as a manager with a 3-0 thrashing of Liverpool, lifting them back into the Premier League title race.

Erling Haaland scored his 99th Premier League goal, while Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku also netted for City.

The hosts looked sharper in the first half at the Etihad, with Haaland missing a penalty before redeeming himself with a well-taken header.

The Reds grew into the game after the opener with skipper Virgil van Dijk seeing a controversial goal ruled out for offside.

The second goal just before the break out the Citizens back in the driver’s seat before man of the match Doku put the icing on the cake with a stunning finish on the hour mark.

The win puts City just four points behind leaders Arsenal while the Reds slumped to eighth ahead of the international break.

In other results, Nottingham Forest boosted their survival bid with a 3-1 win over Leeds, ending a nine-match winless streak.

Aston Villa thrashed Bournemouth 4-0, with Emiliano Buendia and Amadou Onana scoring in the first half, before Ross Barkley and Donyell Malen added to the score in the second.

Newcastle continued their poor away form with a 3-1 defeat at Brentford. Harvey Barnes scored for the Magpies, but they conceded three goals after the break, including a penalty converted by Igor Thiago.

On Saturday, Arsenal drew 2-2 away to Sunderland while Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United also ended in the same scoreline after a flurry of late goals.
