A free app called Grocify has launched on the Google Play Store, letting South Africans compare grocery prices across five major retailers without visiting multiple stores or websites.
Founder Ethan Stander said the idea came from a conversation with his girlfriend’s mother.
“She was complaining about how difficult it is to quickly compare grocery prices across different stores without checking multiple apps or websites, and that conversation planted the seed,” he told MyBroadband.
The app pulls real-time prices from Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Spar and Woolworths.
Users can search for a single item or build a full shopping list. Grocify then shows which retailer offers the best price on the whole basket, or which store to visit for each item if users are willing to shop around.
The app is free and does not require an account. The only permission it needs is your location, to find the nearest stores.
New features added for the public launch include a petrol price calculator. It shows whether the fuel cost of driving to a cheaper store actually saves money. Users can choose from preset fuel consumption figures or enter their own.
Stander also added the ability to change your location to a specific address and to choose which retailers to compare.
Other new features include dark mode, support for Vitality Rewards at Woolworths and Checkers, and a deals page that brings together all rewards programme-linked specials.
Stander said the response from early users has been positive. His next goal is to get Grocify onto the Apple App Store before the end of March.
“It’s just a matter of getting through their approval process,” he said.
