- The lavish celebration sparked debate online, with some South Africans questioning the gap between influencer spending and ordinary struggles.
Content creator Grace Mondlana has sparked debate online after throwing her dog Kai a birthday party more elaborate than most people’s own celebrations.
Mondlana, who has more than three million Instagram followers, shared a vlog showing the preparations before the party in her backyard on 25 July.
The celebration featured pastel blue and yellow decor, said to be visible to dogs, alongside dog friendly treats, face painting, a jumping castle, cake and cupcakes. Fellow content creators, including Banele “Moghelingz” Ndaba, Bheki Ndamase and Tadéus, attended with their own dogs.
Mondlana also told guests that parts of her house were off limits, including the upstairs section, and asked them not to take pictures in front of a mirror near her guest toilet. When a TikTok user questioned the rule, Mondlana said the mirror was part of her personal space.
The scale of the party quickly became a talking point on X, with many South Africans weighing in on the gap between an influencer’s spending and everyday life.
“I’m telling you, Graceland has set a trend. These corporations are gonna run with this, next thing you know we’ll have pet party packs in stores,” one user wrote.
“She really knows how to get the influencers to kiss the ground she walks on,” another commented.
Others defended Mondlana’s no picture rule, saying everyone has the right to set boundaries and protect their personal space, even in their own home.
