The Gqeberha school rugby community is mourning the death of 17 year old Kungawo Booi.
The Westering High School pupil collapsed during practice on Thursday and later died from his injuries.
Kungawo was taking part in a regular training session when he was injured. He collapsed on the field and was given medical attention immediately but he did not survive.
Eastern Province Schools Rugby president Phillip Bosch said there is an inquest underway to find out exactly what happened.
“There is currently an inquest into the matter and as soon as I have information I will report to Eastern Province Rugby. This is not something we want, especially on a training field. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” he said.
Police have confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said police from Kabega Park responded to a call at the school on Bougainvillea Drive.
“On arrival they were informed that the pupil was practising rugby when he was injured. He received medical attention on the scene but passed away,” she said.
The school’s acting principal Hugo Mulder said the school was devastated.
In a statement, he said Kungawo Booi was so much more than just a rugby player. He was a bright, spirited young man who brought energy, warmth and kindness wherever he went.
The Club Rugby in Eastern Cape Facebook page, which has more than 30,000 followers, also posted a message of support to Kungawo’s family and friends.
Counselling is being offered at the school for pupils and staff.
The school has asked the community to support Kungawo’s family during this difficult time.
