Government boosts pensions for over 75s

Social grant recipients got an early Christmas gift as their yearly grant increase goes into their bank accounts this month.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) announced that all social grants went up in October.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said pensioners over 75 will get double the normal increase.

“The old age grant below 75 years has increased from R2,180 to R2,190. But the old age grant of those above 75 years has been increased from R2,190 to R2,210,” Letsatsi said.

This is the second increase this year, after one in April.

Letsatsi said the elderly should not worry if they don’t take out their money immediately.

“It is safer to keep your funds in your bank account, transact with your card and only draw small amounts at a time. Funds will remain in the client’s accounts and will not be forfeited if not withdrawn immediately,” she said.

Many people rush to take out all their money, thinking the government will take it back if they don’t.

Other new grant amounts from October:

  • War veteran’s grant: Up from R2,200 to R2,210
  • Disability grant: Up from R2,180 to R2,190
  • Care dependency grant: Up from R2,180 to R2,190.
