Spiked leather jackets, knee-high boots and mohawks abound; a burgeoning goth scene rules the backstreets of Angola’s capital, Luanda.
The goth scene, a subculture born out of 1970s punk, has its origins in the UK. To most of us now though it’s an ancient sight, with the black leather-clad outfits fading well over a decade ago.
In Angola, however, goth never died – and it never looked better.
The picture above was captured roughly six years ago by Adilson Lusitano.
Blogger Lusayo Simwaka wrote this year that the Angolan goth scene had grown so prominent that in 2016 the Media Library of Luanda invited some of the people at its forefront to speak.
Since then, it has continued to flourish, with cultural writers and photographers flocking to write about this vibrant scene.
