The pensioners can be seen every morning running through the streets of Springs in Ekurhuleni.

They are sticking to their new year’s resolution of staying fit and eating healthily.

The group, part of the Qhubeka Phambile Development Community Centre, also meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for their other exercise classes, which up to 50 people attend.

And some of the members even participate in long-distance runs over 21 and 42 km.

The pensioners are made up of retired nurses and other health professionals, who help each other with advice on how to improve their diet and deal with stress.

Pensioner Thuli Mofolo said running has helped her to regain her mobility after she fell ill and became wheelchair bound.

“I had given up on the dream of walking with aid until I joined the group in 2021. Since then I am no longer using a wheelchair and only depend on crutches for balance.

“My doctor even took me off some of the treatment I was on because I am healthier now than ever before,” the 62-year-old told Scrolla.Africa.

Thuli added that she is living proof that one can turn a new leaf in life by leading a healthy life, and that it is never too late for one to take charge of your health.

Another pensioner, 65-year-old Sibongile Mokoena, said she is encouraging other seniors to join fitness groups in their areas.

“Many pensioners live alone and due to ill health, they are secluded from the outside world and their health quickly deteriorates.

“Through such initiatives where we have established a chain of ubuntu we are able to identify our members’ needs, advise and help where we can even seek outside help,” she added.

Mokoena said the group has worked together to rid themselves of an unhealthy lifestyle and even chronic pain or diseases.
