Glass found in McCain green beans forces recall

Dylan Bettencourt

Frozen food company McCain were forced to recall several green bean and stir fry products after small pieces of glass were found inside the bags.

“This follows reports that fragments of foreign material had been detected,” the company said.

“We have found out the source of the material, confirmed it to be small glass fragments that come from a light fitting and have affected a limited batch of products.”

If swallowed, small pieces of glass will most likely pass through the digestive system without any trouble. However, sharp edges can cause internal bleeding to any part of the digestive tract, including the throat, intestine and rectum. If blood shows up in the stool of the person who swallowed the glass, they are advised to seek medical help.

The statement from McCain added that they have put strict measures in place to ensure this matter does not go across their product range with all affected products being removed from the shelves.

The company did not provide details as to how the glass ended up in the product and how it was picked up before shipment.

The affected products were manufactured between July and October 2021 with a best-before date in 2023.

McCain claimed it was green beans and stir fry affected but some bags of frozen vegetables are also said to have the possibility of small glass fragments.

The recall is nationwide but voluntary. Customers who have bought the affected products are urged to return the products to the store they bought it from to receive a refund or store credit.
