Former Skeem Saam actor Thabo Masoga now working as a bank security guard and asking for help to save his sight

Thabo Masoga, who played Ananias on the show Skeem Saam, has opened up about his struggles in an interview set to air on Sunday World’s YouTube channel. He said he needs R15,000 for a cataract operation on his left eye.

“I just need someone to help me get a surgeon,” he said.

Masoga clarified that he hasn’t lost his flat — he’s just renting it out. But life has changed a lot since his days on TV.

“The five cars are gone. I only have one left, an Opel Corsa, but I don’t drive it for spiritual reasons,” he said.

He explained that a failed business project cost him dearly. “I sold two cars to do a project that cost R800,000, and I didn’t get paid even one cent,” he said.

Masoga also revealed that he was once asked to write scripts for Skeem Saam, even though he wasn’t officially part of the writing team.

“There are stories I’ve written that ended up on TV. But I don’t want to fight, so I won’t mention names,” he said. He believes some of his ideas were changed and shot in KwaZulu-Natal to avoid giving him credit.

He said the industry has let many people down. “Most of what’s on TV today isn’t original — it’s recycled scripts from years ago,” he claimed.

Despite everything, he said, working as a security guard feels like coming full circle.

“I started as a security officer in 1989. After they cut my contract, I went back home. I love working with people and helping the community.”
