As voting got underway in Monday’s municipal elections, a poll found that support for the ANC has dropped below 50%, which could be the lowest they have achieved since 1994.
The series of opinion surveys were carried out by pollsters Ipsos for eNCA.
The study was conducted in three waves during October.
It found that a high or medium voter turnout will favour the ANC, while the DA will benefit from fewer voters.
Of the registered voters who indicated that they will cast a vote on election day, Ipsos found that ANC support will be 43.4%, the DA will be 24.2% and the EFF will be 14.8%.
The pollster published the results of three different scenarios:
- With a high turnout of 59% of registered voters casting their vote, the ANC’s support stands at 45.7%, while the DA’s will be 23.5%.
- With a medium turnout of 42%, the ANC’s support will be 46.5%, with the DA’s rising to 24.2%.
- With a low turnout of 27%, the ANC’s support drops to 38.5% and the DA’s rises to 31.5%.
Ipsos predicts that voter turnout on Monday will be medium to high, favouring the ANC.
