Five people were killed and two sustained severe injuries after the driver of a vehicle lost control and overturned on the R63 near Bedford, in the Eastern Cape.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the accident took place on Saturday night at about 10pm.
Binqose said the vehicle, a Renault Sandero, was travelling towards Adelaide with seven occupants in it, when it overturned.
“Four people died on the scene, while one died on arrival at Bedford Hospital. The deceased [are] four females, among them a seven-year-old girl and the male driver,” Binqose said.
Two women who sustained severe injuries were taken to hospital for further medical care.
Binqose said while the cause of the accident was being investigated, it appeared that the driver lost control of the vehicle.
A case of culpable homicide was opened at Bedford SAPS for further investigation.
