Sizwe Sibiya
Born in a small village called KwaSokhulu, Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal, Miss South Africa 2021 Lalela Mswane, was crowned in a prestigious event held at the Grand Arena in Cape Town on Saturday.
The crowning ceremony was hosted by radio personality and television presenter Anele Mdoda and presenter Nico Panagio who recently fronted Survivor SA for M-Net.
Competing against the commercial pilot and flight instructor Cheneil Hartzenberg and Jeanni Mulder, who is swimmer Chad le Clos’ girlfriend.
Lalela, who surprised the crowd by sporting a ponytail, emerged from the competition victorious.
Two years ago, Miss SA 2019 Zozibini Tunzi went against all odds with her short natural hair and the next year, Miss 2020 Shudufhadzo Musida went with a glorious bald-headed look.
Five fun facts about Miss SA 2021:
- She is model and dancer with a qualification in Law from the University of Pretoria
- At the age of 18, she was the first runner up at the Matric Experience 2015 pageant
- She has two much older siblings, a 37-year-old sister called Hlobisile and a 35-year-old brother Mavela
- She “sucked” her thumb for the first 18 years of her life
- She loves seafood and the series Devious Maids
With an exciting journey ahead of her before the competition, Lalela had said if she wins, she would like to meet the Minister of Employment and Labour, Thulas Nxesi. She explained this surprising goal by revealing that she is devoted to “the reduction of unemployment”.
Is she the next Miss Universe? We will have to wait until December to find out.
