- Police are investigating the shooting and searching for the attackers, who fled without taking anything from the victims.
Three men were killed and two others seriously injured when gunmen opened fire in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, on Wednesday afternoon.
The group of five men had been sitting on the pavement of Harrison Street, close to the cross-border depot, when a gang of armed men approached them. Without warning, the gunmen opened fire before fleeing the scene.
According to witnesses, the attackers did not rob the victims or take anything from them. Residents nearby said the men were regulars in the area who often gathered on the pavement and sometimes help with the bus passengers during the day.
One witness said the shooting happened quickly. “They just came and started shooting. People ran in every direction,” he said.
Police officers cordoned off the scene as forensic teams examined the area for evidence. The motive for the attack is not yet known.
The injured men were taken to hospital under police guard.
The names of the victims have not yet been released as families are still being informed.
This is a developing story.
