Firefighters were on the scene on Monday morning shortly after flames engulfed a factory at the China Mart in Crown Mines, Johannesburg.
The building contains a number of shops. The tenants managed to evacuate their customers, said Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Nana Radebe-Kgiba.
“There are currently no reports of people missing, but search and rescue will be done to ensure everyone was evacuated,” she said.
She said the crews have managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.
“Fire Safety will conduct preliminary investigations to determine the cause of the fire when the fire is extinguished,” she said.
In recent months, the City of Johannesburg has been battling many building fires, mostly in hijacked buildings in the inner city.
