The disused art gallery of the infamous Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality in Komani, Eastern Cape was burnt down on Monday night.
Municipal spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa said in a statement that the cause of the fire was not known and that the fire department would conduct an investigation on Tuesday.
Kowa said the building had been unoccupied and had not been used for municipal administration since 2016 when the Tsolwana, Inkwanca and Lukhanji municipalities were amalgamated to form the Enoch Mgijima Municipality.
“There were no files nor assets kept at the building and the municipality was in negotiations with potential occupants in the public and the private sectors.”
The municipality was accused of massive corruption after the unveiling of a sports field that reportedly cost R15 million to build.
The Hawks confirmed last week that they are investigating the case after a complaint was lodged over a R22 million tender awarded to build the controversial Lesseyton Sports Facility.
