They’ve been without a mayor for nearly a month, but now the eThekwini municipality is finally on the verge of electing someone to fill the post.
The ANC decided to remove mayor Mxolisi Kaunda based on recommendations from party deployee Mike Mabuyakhulu, who was not happy with Kaunda’s performance.
On Monday, City Manager Musa Mbhele’s office sent out a media invitation. “The City of eThekwini will on the 10th of July 2024 hold a special council meeting to elect the mayor.
The meeting will take place at the Durban ICC,” it read.
The ANC has already submitted three names for the mayoral position.
ANC KZN spokesperson Mafika Mndebele told Scrolla.Africa that these names will go through internal processes until the national office selects one candidate for the council’s mayoral vote.
Mndebele declined to reveal the candidates’ names, but Scrolla.Africa has learned that former KZN premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube, former police minister Bheki Cele, and former KZN agriculture MEC Cyril Xaba are in the running.
Xaba was a candidate for the eThekwini mayoral post in 2011, Dube-Ncube once served as the municipality speaker, and Cele was the ANC regional chairperson of eThekwini.
