Fifa president makes a mess of Pelé farewell

Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s insistence on taking a selfie with Pelé’s open casket is just the latest antic that has made him an unpopular figure in the world of football.

Following the passing of the legendary Brazilian footballer last Thursday, Infantino travelled to the South American country to pay his respects.

And all was going well when Infantino said he would request that every footballing nation name one stadium after Pelé.

As unrealistic as it sounds, it was the thought that counted. The Fifa boss felt future generations should be aware of Pelé’s influence on the sport.

However, any credit for a generous idea went out the window during Pelé’s final farewell when Infantino took a selfie with the open casket.

He tried to cover up the error by claiming that he had been asked by Pelé’s family members to take a picture together. However, the location of the image was in very poor taste.

“I am dismayed after having been informed that I am apparently being criticised by some people for having taken a selfie and pictures at the ceremony yesterday (Tuesday).

“I would like to clarify that I was both honoured and humbled that team-mates and family members of the great Pelé asked me if I could take a few photos with them,” Infantino said in a statement.

He has not been a popular figure in the world of football of late, mostly due to his actions and comments during the Qatar World Cup.

After being dismissive regarding migrant worker and LGBTQ+ rights in Qatar, the Fifa president said he felt “gay” and like a “migrant worker” on the eve of the tournament.

He also managed to end the tournament on a bad note, with celebrity chef and personal friend Salt Bae managing to get onto the field during Argentina’s celebrations and lift the trophy.

His presence caused outrage as usually only a very select number of individuals made up of World Cup winners and staff are allowed to touch the famous trophy.

Fifa declared they would investigate how the chef gained unauthorised access onto the field. Meanwhile, Infantino unfollowed his friend on Instagram.
