Fiery Arsenal paint London red

Arsenal returned to the summit of the Premier League table with a 1-0 victory over London rivals Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners came into the game as favourites and they played like it, dominating Chelsea throughout the encounter.

The only thing missing for Mikel Arteta and his side was to test the Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, going into the half-time break without a shot on goal.

The start of the second half was much more of the same. Quick passing left Graham Potter’s side chasing shadows across the pitch.

At the hour mark Arsenal deservedly took the lead through a Chelsea defensive error.

Bukayo Saka’s corner slipped right through the Chelsea backline before Arsenal defender Gabriel touched it in at the back post.

The Brazilian defender scored his ninth goal for the club – all of them coming from corners.

The remainder of the fixture remained much the same, Arsenal dominating possession with Chelsea unable to create any chance.

England and Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was a spectator, hardly being called into action from the first to the final minute of the match.

Fixtures like these provide the perfect test of what it takes to be a Premier League champion and the Gunners passed with flying colours.

For Chelsea it is two consecutive Premier League defeats after losing 4-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion.

As the rain poured down at Stamford Bridge, the misery for Chelsea fans worsened as they would have realised the loss put them down to seventh in the Premier League standings.

It was a sharp contrast to rivals Arsenal, who have transformed a promising start to the season into a solid chance of lifting the trophy come the end of it.

Next up for both sides is the Carabao Cup third round, with Chelsea facing another tough obstacle in Manchester City.

Arsenal on the other hand face Brighton in their midweek fixture.
