  • Soweto designer Lehlohonolo Fako turns old jeans into stylish new pieces with bold cuts and details.
  • His custom denim creations have caught the eye of stars and fashion lovers across the country.

Soweto-born designer Lehlohonolo Fako, who started Kaymo Clothing in Protea South, has become known for turning ordinary denim into standout pieces.

From jackets loaded with extra pockets to short pants with press studs, his designs are made for people who want something different.

After matric, he studied fashion at SW Gauteng College’s George Tabor campus in Dube. But it was his uncle’s sense of style that started his passion for denim.

ā€œMy uncle used to wear denim head to toe — what they called ā€˜jean to jean’ — and that’s how I fell in love with the look,ā€ he said.

Fako’s confidence grew even more when he worked as a fashion consultant at G-Star Raw, a brand known for its focus on denim. He used the chance to learn everything he could about styling and working with the fabric.

Now, Fako’s designs are worn by stars like actor Andile Nebulane, who played detective Malinga on Generations: The Legacy, and fashion influencer Wendy Ntinezo.

He also upcycles old jeans from friends and family, turning them into waxed denim with a fresh coating and new look.

Fako says social media has played a big part in growing his brand by helping him reach more customers beyond Gauteng.

The name Kaymo Clothing came from his late grandmother, who called him Kamohelo.
