In a stunning turn of events, the fake lawyer known as Doctor Sobetha found himself back in court on Wednesday, this time seeking legal representation for his own bail application.
Sobetha, 31, had been remanded in custody by the Bethal Magistrate’s Court after being arrested last month for impersonating an attorney in a murder case.
Sobetha had been posing as a lawyer, representing murder accused Mhlabuyaxega Mntungwa in the case against former Sam Holdings general manager, Nkosinathi Ngcongo.
However, during Mhlabuyaxega’s second court appearance, authorities questioned Sobetha’s credibility and swooped in after he failed to provide the name of the institution where he had studied law.
All Sobetha could produce as evidence of his legitimacy was the gown he wore and a matric certificate, leaving everyone shocked, including his own family. In fact, according to a family member who spoke anonymously to Scrolla.Africa, Sobetha had only completed Grade 10 and had never been a lawyer!
Now, the alleged fake lawyer himself is scrambling to find legal representation. Scrolla.Africa can confirm that Sobetha will not be representing himself in court.
Sobetha’s family expressed their disbelief at his actions after Scrolla.Africa published the story, and the Hawks spokesperson for Mpumalanga, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, confirmed that the case has been postponed until 2 May 2023 for a further bail hearing as investigations continue.
With the court proceedings unfolding like a sensational tabloid drama, all eyes are on Doctor Sobetha as he faces the consequences of his audacious impersonation.
