Facebook and Instagram crash

On Tuesday, users of Facebook discovered that they had been logged out, and Instagram refused to work at all.

Reports from across the globe confirmed that Facebook, Instagram and Messenger had gone down in what appears to be a huge outage at parent company Meta.

This led to widespread concern among users that their accounts had been hacked, but the error messages appear to be the result of problems with Facebook’s login system, rather than a hack or cyber attack.

The Independent in the UK reported that “Meta does not run official status pages for its consumer products” and was yet to post updates about the outage on its official accounts such as X (ex Twitter).

“Tracking website Down Detector showed vast outages at Instagram, Facebook and Messenger on Tuesday. The problems were spotted right across the world, suggesting that the outage could be global,” according to the report.

Meta’s status page for business products, including advertising on Facebook and Instagram, is said to be “working as expected”, while WhatsApp also appears to be operating normally.
