Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the former premier of KwaZulu-Natal, has rejected the offer of an ambassadorial post.

Dube-Ncube’s term as premier ended last Friday when the ANC voted for Thami Ntuli, IFP provincial chairperson and former mayor of the King Cetshwayo District Municipality to replace her.

Dube-Ncube’s last public appearance was on 9 June at the funeral of the late deputy director-general Zakhele Mnqayi, where she delivered a eulogy.

After that, she disappeared and did not attend the first sitting of the KZN Legislature as the outgoing premier.

She was also absent during the inauguration of the premier-elect on Tuesday.

A source told Scrolla.Africa she was approached last week to consider redeployment as an ambassador.

“The national leadership of the ANC met with her to discuss her redeployment as an ambassador because she is held in high esteem for her work as ambassador to the Czech Republic before she came back in 2009 to join the KZN Government,” the source said.

“But she made it clear that she won’t accept the redeployment outside of the country because her kids are still young. The leadership understood her concerns as she is also a widow.”

Some ANC leaders are hoping she might be invited by President Cyril Ramaphosa to serve in his cabinet, however the president might rather invite those who supported his survival campaign at the ANC national general council before the party’s 2017 elective congress.

Dube-Ncube’s phone rang unanswered for a long time, and she did not respond to questions sent to her. ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula could also not be reached for comment.
