Humanity is marching boldly towards its own extinction – and the Daily Maverick has made a plea for civilization to turn around before it’s too late.
On Tuesday, the publication released a music video for the song “Eve of Destruction”, featuring the extraordinary voice of Anneli Kampfer.
The song is a call to combat the climate crisis, which is already upon us and whose disastrous effects are already irreversible.
The video opens with shots of flames billowing out of one of South Africa’s countless polluting factories.
“The burning world, it is exploding,” Kampfer sings, her face superimposed over the footage.
As she sings, the video flicks to other alarming footage. First of wildfires, which are getting bigger and more frequent every year.
Then images of violence pop up, of civil unrest, military operations. These are interspersed with footage of more natural and ecological disasters. We see footage of hurricanes, oil spills, droughts and floods.
“You tell me over and over and over again, my friend, you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.”
In the face of irrefutable evidence, humanity continues to walk towards the cliff edge – and we’re gaining pace. Watch the video here.
