Etihad stalemate hands Liverpool top spot!

On super Sunday in the Premier League title run-in, it was Liverpool that benefitted most as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Brighton 2-1 at Anfield before City and Arsenal drew 0-0 in Manchester.

Few managers have the honour of walking through the Anfield tunnel with a record as proud as Roberto de Zerbi’s.

And 87 seconds into the early game, Brighton had left the Kop in a state of pin-drop silence as they went ahead through Danny Welbeck.

The three-way title race had Arsenal’s trip to Manchester as the one of the games to watch in the run-in — and with Liverpool going one down so early, many would have thought that the Citizens and the Gunners were now the firm favourites.

But Luis Diaz levelled matters before the break and cometh the hour, cometh the man as Mohamed Salah put the hosts in front to send the Reds back to the summit of the standings.

An Alexis Mac Allister masterclass against his former club did not go unnoticed either, with Liverpool knowing that any result other than an Arsenal win would now leave them at the top with nine games to go on Klopp’s farewell tour.

What unfolded up the road in the blue half of Manchester was everything the Merseysiders could have asked for, as City’s near 700 passes saw no shots on target in open play.

Mikel Arteta’s side, too, had just two attempts on goal as Arsenal stayed in second place following the sharing of the Easter Sunday spoils.

Ahead of their midweek game against Sheffield United and a highly anticipated trip to Old Trafford, Liverpool end the week two points clear of Arsenal and three ahead of Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side next face fourth placed Aston Villa on Wednesday while the Gunners take on Luton Town at the Emirates.
