With so many ANC regional leaders leaving the ANC for the newly-formed uMkhonto Wesizwe, there is no telling who will jump ship next.
No leader who is in public office on an ANC ticket can afford to ignore allegations of being disloyal to the ANC.
The ANC in the region has already issued instructions to its branches to report members who were recruiting for the MK.
The division has become so clear that half of the KwaZulu-Natal leadership stand up when Jacob Zuma walks into a room and the other half including provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma remain seated.
Mxolisi Kaunda, the mayor of eThekwini Metro is the latest leader who has been accused of supporting Zuma.
Even though the allegations were made through a faceless social media account, the mayor could not ignore the allegations which place his R1.4 million salary at risk.
An angry Mxolisi Kaunda released a statement after a faceless account claimed that Kaunda had used eThekwini resources to support the activation of the MK party.
“EThekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda would like to dismiss the spurious allegations circulating on social media that he has directed the resources of the municipality to support activations for the newly formed uMkhonto Wesizwe party,” the statement read.
Kaunda has described the allegations as an attempt to tarnish his image and that of the City of EThekwini.
Zuma, the de facto leader of the MK has been criss-crossing the province, convincing thousands to join the new party.
ANC eThekwini spokesperson Mlondi Mkhize has confirmed that they have asked their branches to keep an eye on anyone backing the MK party.
The once powerful Zuma still wields power in KZN and is expected to appeal to ANC, EFF and IFP supporters in the province.
