Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad dominated with the ball after the Proteas opted to bat first on day one of the second test in Manchester.

Dean Elgar won the toss for the visitors but the Proteas struggled with the bat and only got to 151 all out.

Sarel Erwee was the first to go, with Anderson dismissing him early before Broad got in on the act to remove the skipper.

The two new ball bowlers finished off with three wickets apiece and captain Ben Stokes chipped in with two to prevent the South African batters from building any solid partnerships.

The sun came out to change things in the second session but the Proteas were already five down and the batting conditions came more to the aid of the hosts.

South Africa did not make things any easier for themselves when they took the ball, giving away 20 extras over the course of the 28 overs England faced up to.

Despite an early wicket from Lungi Ngidi to get Alex Lees out for four, Zak Crawley looked comfortable in his defence and Jonny Bairstow finished not out on 38 off just 45.

Ainrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada got a wicket a piece as well but England trail by just 40 runs with seven wickets in hand going into Friday morning.
