The Three Lions only managed a 1-1 draw on a difficult evening against Denmark before Spain defeated Italy 1-0 to progress to the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
Riccardo Calafiori’s own goal was enough for Spain to progress to the last 16 as winners of Group B.
Luis de la Fuente’s side restricted the defending champions to just a single attempt on target across the 90 minutes, with Italy suffering their first Euro defeat since losing to Ireland in 2016.
Spain came out with solid intent after their 3-0 win over Croatia, testing Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal from the onset.
The result means that they will now progress as table toppers regardless of what happens in their final group game against Albania on Monday.
In Group C, England keep their place at the top despite a far from convincing performance against Denmark in Frankfurt.
Serbia and Slovenia’s 1-1 draw earlier in the day means that Harry Kane’s first goal of the tournament was enough to keep the Three Lions at the summit heading into their third game on Tuesday.
The England skipper netted first, with Gareth Southgate’s side looking strong in the opening exchanges.
Morten Hjulmand equalised for the Danes after England sat back, though, with his thunderbolt coming as the the 13th goal scored from outside the box at this edition of the tournament — already more than there were in the entire group stage of Euro 2020.
On Friday, Netherlands face France in the pick of the games after Slovakia take on Ukraine and Poland play Austria.
