Eight people have died after a taxi and a truck collided on the N3 highway between Van Reenen’s Pass and Montrose in KwaZulu-Natal.
Six other people were injured and taken to hospital in Harrismith. The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed.
Road Incident Management Systems chairperson Sipho Towa said on Thursday that emergency workers are still gathering information about what happened.
The crash forced authorities to close parts of the busy route. Only the slow lane heading south and the fast lane heading north remain open.
Traffic on the N3 was backed up for several kilometres as rescue teams cleared the scene and transported the injured to hospital.
Officials have urged drivers to be patient and drive carefully while investigations continue.
This is a developing story.
