The EFF has summarily suspended two of its Durban members following allegations that they were engaged in extortion.
Anele Faku was accused of extortion in the township of Umlazi.
Faku’s suspension letter reads in part: “It has come to our attention that you have engaged yourself in conduct that is contrary to the provisions of the EFF Constitution, the EFF Code of Conduct and Revolutionary Code of Discipline as a member of the EFF.
“Amongst violations, it is alleged that you have involved yourself in extortion using the name of the Economic Freedom Fighters.
“If that is true, your conduct also puts the organisation into disrepute. You have also breached the EFF Constitution, Policies and Principles in that you have conducted yourself in a corrupt manner to enrich yourself.”
The letter was signed by Nkululeko Ngubane, the party’s provincial secretary.
Faku told Scrolla.Africa: “I’m not a violent person so I didn’t do any extortion. It’s not my nature to force people. It’s just a smear campaign against us since we always confront leaders on political matters.”
An almost identical letter was sent to Bongumusa Mhlongo from Clermont, west of Durban. It alleged that Mhlongo was extorting money from private security companies.
Mhlongo denied the allegations, saying they were a smear campaign by the party after he indicated that he was leaving it.
