EFF councillors in the eThekwini metropolitan municipality are waiting for direction from their national leadership on whether to support the government of national unity (GNU) bloc in the election of the new mayor.

This was revealed by EFF caucus leader Themba Mvubu in an interview with Scrolla.Africa ahead of Wednesday’s special sitting.

At 4pm on Tuesday, the EFF councillors were still in the dark about their position.

Mvubu explained: “We are waiting for direction from our national leadership over this matter. It might happen that we cannot vote so that we would allow their GNU to collapse without being part of it.”

The EFF recently withdrew from its coalition agreement with the ANC in eThekwini, following the emergence of the GNU nationally and the government of provincial unity (GPU) in the province.

Their cooperation began in 2023 after the EFF ended its coalition with the IFP in several KwaZulu-Natal municipalities.

Last month, EFF KZN chairperson Mongezi Thwala said that the ANC’s decision to enter the GPU arrangements in the province led to the collapse of their working relationship, which was already on the decline, especially in eThekwini.

Towards the end of last year, EFF councillors joined forces with other opposition parties in an attempt to remove former eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda, who was moved to the National Council of Provinces by the ANC last month.

On Wednesday, the ANC will field its own candidate after submitting the names of three potential candidates to the party’s Luthuli House headquarters.

The candidates are former KZN premier Nomusa maDube-Ncube, former police minister Bheki Cele, and former agriculture KZN MEC Cyril Xaba.
