There is now nothing standing in the way of Julius Malema’s EFF taking over complete control of the Ekurhuleni Metro through a vote of no confidence.
The Fighters, who are the tail that wags the dog in the ANC-led coalition, successfully replaced Council Speaker Raymond Dlamini with Nthabiseng Tshivhenga – their own councillor.
Dlamini was voted out in absentia in a motion of no confidence during a special council meeting held at the OR Tamba Government Precinct on Thursday night.
The speaker tried to block a vote of no confidence against him and Mayor Tania Campbell by collapsing the meeting.
Councillor’s from the EFF, ANC, IRASA and the Super Seven political parties remained behind, continued with the meeting and elected a new speaker.
During the meeting, the leader of the ANC caucus councilor Jongizizwa Dlabathi was elected as the acting whip of council following the abrupt resignation of the whip of council Khetha Shandu on Wednesday.
The motion of no confidence was tabled two weeks ago at the ordinary council meeting by the ‘Super Seven’, which includes the ACDP, African Independent Congress, PAC, COPE, UDM, ATM and Independent Citizens Movement.
Leader of the Super Seven, Joe Mojapelo of the Independent Citizens Movement said the two councils were not fit to hold office.
The EFF takeover of the R51 billion municipality is conditioned upon the EFF supporting the ANC in its bid to unseat Tshwane Mayor Randall Williams.
