A nurse and a security guard from Sigodlo Clinic in Debe Nek, Amathole were assaulted during a robbery on Friday, locked inside a dispensary, and only discovered on Saturday morning.

A spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Health, Sizwe Kupelo, said armed men assaulted the two before stealing computers, a photocopying machine, infant formula, groceries, TV sets, phones and a gas cylinder.

He said the criminals tied the victims up inside the dispensary before locking the door with handcuffs. They were only found at 6 am on Saturday when a security guard arrived for his shift.

Health MEC Nkosazana Meth condemned the attack and called on police to leave no stone unturned to find the thugs. She expressed serious concerns about unwarranted attacks that are affecting service delivery.

This is the latest attack on facilities in the province, after electrical cables were stolen from Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha, forcing the hospital to use generators for five days. A fence at Mabandla Clinic in Kariega was also stolen recently.
