Eastern Cape African ANC chairperson Oscar Mabuyane says he is confident that the province will be governed by the party for the next five years.
The ANC has been in power in the Eastern Cape since 1994. Now, 30 years on, the party is setting out to win hearts and votes in the province again.
Speaking at the ANC’s provincial manifesto launch in Port Alfred on Saturday, Mabuyane claims the party has made great strides to improve the living conditions of citizens.
“Our people know this and this is why we will come out on top in the elections with more than 50% of the votes,” he said.
In the 2019 general elections, the party managed to get 68.7% of the votes in the province.
While the ANC claims to have improved the lives of ordinary citizens, the province remains one of the poorest in the country.
The Eastern Cape has the highest unemployment rate, with nearly 42% of its people unemployed.
“We are currently revitalising these factories. We are pumping in resources but we must bring in investors. That is why we say our preoccupation must be more on micro economics as a province,” Mabuyane said.
He admitted the provincial government still had work to do. The seventh administration since democracy in 1994 will give the ANC a chance to continue improving the lives of the people of the Eastern Cape, he claimed.
The provincial manifesto launch was attended by the ANC’s top brass and members of the national executive committee — including Senzo Mchunu, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Mmamoloko Kubayi and ANC women’s league president Sisisi Tolashe.
