Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes is “under suspicion” of drug trafficking. This comes after he was the subject of an attempted murder investigation in 2020.
Promes and some of his family members are alleged to have bought a stake in a 4,000 kilogram shipment of cocaine, which was seized by authorities in Belgium in April 2020.
The shipment was worth £100 million (R1.9 billion).
The 30-year-old, who has made 50 appearances for Holland and played at Euro 2020, was arrested in December 2020 in connection with a stabbing case.
The victim was believed to be his cousin, according to media reports in the Netherlands.
The case is ongoing. Last week prosecutors elevated the charges of manslaughter and aggravated assault to attempted murder in order to speed up proceedings.
Promes spent two nights in prison but has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
In a new development, Dutch outlet De Telegraaf have reported that Promes confessed to the stabbing in wire-tapped phone calls.
His calls were reportedly being monitored as a result of his alleged links to a drug network.
The next court hearing is scheduled for 31 March after Promes’s lawyer accepted the request of the victim’s representative for a more severe charge.
The former Ajax Amsterdam star left the Dutch club for a second-spell in Russia with Spartak Moscow in 2021.
The legal cloud hanging over the player hasn’t seemed to have impacted his form; he scored in his side’s fixture against Krasnador on Sunday.
The versatile attacker made his Netherlands debut in 2014 and has since found the back of the net seven times for the country.
