Zintathu Thengwayo spends her days in a busy kitchen in Durban. She helps her mother run the family catering business.
The business belongs to her mother, MaZungu. She started it in 2016 and named it after her first born daughter.
Today, Zintathu and her sibling Nqobile help keep it going. What began as a family idea has grown into a full catering service.
They prepare food for weddings, funerals, functions and small gatherings. During the week, they also run a takeaway shop.
The shop is at 60 Anton Lembede Street in the Durban central business district. It opens from Monday to Friday and serves workers who need affordable meals.
The business has also secured bigger clients.
Since 2022, it has catered for the football team Natal Richboyz, which plays in the Betway Soccer League.
Through that work, the company has provided food at tournaments and events linked to Carling Black Label, Sundowns Football Club and M Sports Marketing Communications.
Zintathu Concept also hires out catering equipment for events.
For this family, the kitchen is more than a workplace. It is a way to survive rising living costs.
By building the business while working, they are creating opportunities for themselves. They are using their skills and teamwork to stay afloat in a tough economy.
