The eThekwini municipality has banned 32 companies from receiving metro tenders after finding they were involved in corruption.
Delivering his first 100-day report, Mayor Cyril Xaba said some companies had conflicts of interest because their directors worked for the state. Others didn’t finish or do their work properly, committed fraud, or collaborated to steal from the city.
“We have taken drastic measures to eradicate corruption and malpractices emanating from service providers. Last month, the city blacklisted eight companies, which brings to 32 the total number of blacklisted entities,” he said.
The decision disqualifies them from participating in the municipality’s procurement system.
The city has long struggled with corrupt companies, leading it to hire investigators like Manase and Ngubane & Co to uncover wrongdoing, including abusing emergency tender rules.
Xaba also announced that the city will build permanent homes for flood victims who have lived in temporary shelters since April 2022. Six sites have been approved for the houses.
The mayor added that the city has used all of its R1.2-billion government disaster grant to fix roads and drains damaged in the 2022 floods.
