Two men accused of drug dealing used three pythons to scare off officers from the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) who were trying to arrest them on Friday.
The cops raided a house in Rabie Ridge near Tembisa after receiving a tip-off about a group of men allegedly dealing in drugs.
Residents living on the same street said the men unleashed snakes on the officers, who ran for their lives.
The police had to call for backup.
EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato confirmed the incident.
She said two suspects, aged 23 and 28, were arrested but that the officers’ retreat allowed some suspects to escape arrest.
Makgato said police also found parts of a stolen vehicle at the premises.
The two arrested suspects are being held at the Rabie Ridge Police Station.
Snake handlers from the SPCA were called to the scene and caught the pythons.
Police urged community members to help trace the suspects who evaded arrest.
