Since winning Afcon in 1974, DR Congo has found the continental title elusive.
But a wave of self-belief has taken over the Leopards, who are in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after knocking out seven-time champions Egypt.
They now meet Guinea at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Ivory Coast on Friday.
Often underperforming at previous Afcon editions, despite a galaxy of stars playing in Europe, it has been difficult to explain DR Congo’s previous Afcon failures.
But they are now back in contention with what looks like an average squad led by Frenchman Sebastien Desabre.
“I always said it – we are challengers in this competition,” Desabre told the media.
“Mentally, we have confidence, we are very united, we work together. This is what I remember today as a coach – the serenity that emanates from our game. We know our strengths!”
After completing second in their group campaign after unimpressive draws with Morocco, Zambia and Tanzania, the Leopards looked lost in this competition.
But they are confident about regaining their feline prowess in Ivory Coast.
Their elimination of Egypt in what was a statement of intent in the last-16 came via a penalty shootout.
DR Congo is up against Guinea who have a quarter-final showing as their best Afcon outing, despite not being regarded as one of the most competitive outfits on the continent.
Guinea reached this Afcon last-16 as one of the third-best finishers after beating Gambia 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with Cameroon, as well as defeating defending champions Senegal 2-0.
