MAMELODI Sundowns showed why they are the dominant force in South Africa’s elite league when they beat Stellenbosch 3-0 in the DStv Premiership clash to reclaim the top spot from Swallows FC.
This win has taken them to 13 points from five matches, two ahead of second place Swallows. Peter Shalulile and Kermit Erasumus put Downs ahead going before half time, showing why Downs spent so much money on buying them from Highlands Park and Cape Town City respectively.
This was Sundowns first match after the passing of their defender Anele Ngcongca. It got emotional when the players paid respect to Ngcongca by showing a jersey with Ngcongca’s name and face.
Current PSL footballer of the season Themba Zwane scored the final goal in the second stanza taking Downs to seven goals from two successive matches. This time the champions managed to keep it tight at the back and kept a clean sheet – something they failed to do when they beat AmaZulu 4-3 last weekend.
Should Sundowns continue with this form they could well write their name into the history books of South African football by becoming the first team to win the league four times in a row.
But teams like Stellenbosch still stand a chance to fix their defensive blunders that cost them tonight’s match. Their coach Steve Barker, a nephew to former Bafana Bafana AFCON winning coach in 1996 Clive Barker, still have time to make sure his lads become a force to be reckoned with this season.
