Doggy birthday party in India shut down in police raid

Three people have been arrested in the Indian city of Ahmedabad for violating Covid-19 protocols by organising a lavish birthday party for their pet dog.

Abby, a two-year-old Pomerian, had her extravagant celebrations cut short when police saw footage of the “birthday bash” on social media and acted quickly to shut it down.

Brothers Chirag and Urvish Patel and Divyesh Maheria were taken into police custody for organising the party – which cost them a reported R150,000.

“A patrolling police party from Nikol police station received information that a person named Chirag Patel alias Daago had organised a birthday party for his dog Abby, who turned two years old and norms of social distancing were being flouted at the event,” constable Sunil Kumar Patni said in an official complaint.

“After a police team reached the spot, several men and women were seen performing garba without wearing masks or following social distancing. The accused were unable to show any permission for the event they organised.”

National restrictions have been imposed in India, as the Omicron variant continues to spread across the country.

India recorded nearly 160,000 Covid-19 cases on Saturday, six times the figure recorded the previous week.
