A medical doctor has been arrested, with three other suspects, after his ex-wife was shot and killed in a hail of bullets.

The four suspects were arrested after a 33-year-old Vanderbijlpark woman was allegedly shot and killed on Friday.

Among those arrested is a medical doctor, who is reported to be the ex-husband of the woman.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the woman was shot while stationary at a robot by suspects driving a Honda car.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found the woman in the driver’s seat of a Nissan bakkie, with multiple bullet wounds on her body. She was certified dead on the scene.

“Police immediately established a task team consisting of the Sedibeng trio task team, tactical response team, K9, tracking team, and provincial crime intelligence to trace and arrest the suspects.

“Through the intelligence-led investigation, information led the team to Kliprivier, Sebokeng, Sharpeville and Vereeniging, where four suspects were arrested. Police recovered the firearm and seized the vehicle used during the commission of crime,” said Masondo.

Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni applauded the Sedibeng police and provincial crime intelligence for working speedily to ensure that the suspects were traced and arrested.

“I am pleased at the manner in which the team handled this investigation and the swift response in arresting the suspects.

“Gender-based violence remains one of the top priorities of the police in Gauteng. The suspects will be brought to book for the gruesome murder of a woman,” said Mthombeni.

The motive for the crime is still under investigation.

All four suspects are expected to appear at the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face a charge of murder.
